Lanzarote is a Spanish island, the northernmost and easternmost of the autonomous Canary Islands within the Atlantic Ocean. It’s positioned roughly 125 kilometres (78 miles) off the north coast of Africa and 1,000 kilometres (621 miles) from the Iberian Peninsula. Overlaying 845.94 sq. kilometres (326.62 sq. miles), Lanzarote is the fourth-largest of the islands within the archipelago. With 152,289 inhabitants initially of 2019, it’s the third most populous Canary Island, after Tenerife and Gran Canaria. Positioned within the centre-west of the island is Timanfaya Nationwide Park, one in all its principal sights. The island was declared a biosphere reserve by UNESCO in 1993. The island’s capital is Arrecife.
The primary recorded identify for the island, given by Italian-Majorcan cartographer Angelino Dulcert, was Insula de Lanzarotus Marocelus, after the Genoese navigator Lancelotto Malocello, from which the fashionable identify is derived. The island’s identify within the native Guanche language was Tyterogaka or Tytheroygaka, which can imply “one that’s all ochre” (referring to the island’s predominant color).
